A Scientific Destiny

February 24, 2013
Marie D sent me this story.

I have some great stories that my father, Jerome (Jerry)Knowlton Holmes related to me a number of years ago. My father, who eventually earned a Ph. D in Organic Chemistry, conducted his first experiments when he was about five years of age. The first was to put a bicycle pump in his brother Fenwicke's mouth to determine whether he could blow him up. The second was a gravitational experiment where my father hung from his knees on a jungle gym and ate a sandwich to determine whether he could, as he said, "swallow up." The last experiment (at least the last one he related to me concerning this period of his life) was when he clambered into a bucket and yanked on the handle to determine whether he could lift himself up. From that point forward, Jerry said, he knew he was destined to be a scientist!
