Rachel Louise Goodenough was the great-granddaughter of Daniel and Charlotte Holmes. She was the daughter of Charles Rex Goodenough and Edna Rachel Malin. Her grandmother, Anna Ballantyne Goodenough, was one of the first two grandchildren of Daniel and Charlotte - she was a twin to Jessie. Anna's mother was Frances Ann, Daniel and Charlotte's first daughter. Rachel had an older sister, Frances Patricia, who went by Patricia. The sudden death of little Rachel Louise Goodenough, from scarlet fever, after the crisis was supposed to be passed, casts a gloom over the community.
It was the only case of contagious disease in the vicinity, and had been promptly quarantined. The patient was quite low for a day or two, but there were good grounds for hopes for her recovery up to last Monday, when alarming glandular troubles appeared and even suspicion of mastoid.
Disease in this vicinity, and had been rendering every possible assistance, and Dr. Chase of Fort Dodge was also called on Monday. It was decided that the only possible chance for recovery would be an operation, and Drs. Russell and Beeh of Ft. Dodge were summoned and were on their way, but the child died about 5:00 p.m. before their arrival. (I wrote this paragraph as I found it, although something appears to be missing at the beginning. Deceased was nearly five years of age. She was born in Forest City, but mother Mrs. Edna Goodenough has been making her home with Mrs. Malin for the past year and a half. A simple service was held.
